ABU-SAID KHAN (716-736AH/1316-1335AD)
Rare and enigmatic posthumous AbuSaid 2 AR dirhams. Tabriz 737AHObverse: Sultan AbuSaid, May Allah perpetuate his kingdom.
Reverse: Kalima in square.
This coins have 3 circles on the obverse, they may be a Tamgha(?). Comment by Christian Rasmussen (Denmark):"They belong to a small group, and all seem to be struck in 737 or 738. when the break-down of the Ilkhanid Empire was in progress subsequent to Abu Said's death in 736AH... There's debate over the mint: Steve Album says "pseudo-Tabriz" and describesthem as "rare type, local issue of Erzurum area". On the other hand Lutz Ilisch reads the mint as "Shahr" (with "Siirt" as yet another option), and regards them as associated with the Artukid State of Mardin. Personally, it seems tome that there's definitely an extra letter involved, compared to the way Tabriz is generally rendered on Ilkhanid coins. Still, basically dates and mint must be considered unsettled. The quality is generally low: Struck sometimes with rusty dies, and often on primitive, uneven flans of greatly varying size, metal quality, and and weight (from less than 2.0 grams to well over 6 grams). The pair offered here weigh 2.92g. resp.4.00g., & must be regarded as very fine for the type. Unlisted in Album.
